The 2-hour rule: using creams around radiation sessions

    In short

    • Apply cream at least 2 hours before a radiation session, and arrive with clean, product-free skin on the treated area.
    • Moisturise again after the session and before bed.
    • If your radiation team gives different instructions, follow theirs.

    Why timing matters

Radiation teams plan each session so that the dose reaches the right depth. Traditionally, patients are asked to avoid a fresh layer of cream on the skin at the time of treatment, because a thick layer on the surface could slightly change the dose the skin itself receives. Applying well ahead of the session gives the product time to absorb.

Practice varies between centres. Some are more relaxed about thin layers of moisturiser, and others have strict rules. Your own team's protocol is the one to follow.

A simple schedule for treatment days

    1. Morning: wash gently and apply a thin layer of cream, as long as your session is at least 2 hours away.
    2. Before the session: do not reapply. If your session is early, skip the morning application and apply afterwards.
    3. After the session: apply once you are home.
    4. Before bed: apply again.

On days without a session, including weekends, apply two to three times through the day.

Other things to keep off the treated area

    • Perfume, aftershave and fragranced lotions
    • Products containing alcohol
    • Thick ointments or oils just before treatment
    • Adhesive tape and plasters, unless your team applies them

Ask your team about deodorant if your armpit is in the treated area. Advice on this differs between centres.

    How much to apply

A thin, even layer is enough. More is not better. Skin should feel comfortable, not coated. If the skin marks made for your treatment are in the area, apply gently around them and do not scrub them off.

    Keep going after treatment ends

Skin reactions often peak in the one to two weeks after the last session. Continue your routine for 4 to 6 weeks, or until your team tells you skin has recovered.

When to call your radiation team

    • Skin that blisters, opens, or peels and looks wet
    • Increasing pain, swelling or warmth
    • Pus, an unpleasant smell or fever

    Where Dr. Onco fits

Radiation Defence Cream is light and absorbs quickly, which makes it easy to fit around sessions. Apply it two to three times a day from Day 1, and at least 2 hours before each session.
